Top Places To Visit & Things To Do In Portugal
Portugal’s southern coastal region, the Algarve, is known for its beautiful weather, dramatic cliffs, breathtaking beaches and picturesque seaside villages. This spectacular area also offers modern amenities and resorts for travellers while still maintaining traditional Portuguese culture throughout the tiny whitewashed towns and fishing villages along the coast. It’s no wonder that this area is one of the most popular for tourists to visit! On our holidays including the Algarve, we’ll enjoy plenty of time to explore the highlights of this incredible region.
The tiny fishing village of Sagres is located in the far southwest corner of Portugal, just a few kilometres from Cape St. Vincent, the most south-westerly point of continental Europe. The town is most famous for the Fortaleza de Sagres, a fort on the tip of Sagres Point, which may have been the home of the legendary ‘School of Sagres’. The charming town of Sagres and its surrounding beaches are a perfect destination for those looking to surf, hike, or just relax and soak up the sun.
The Fortaleza de Sagres is a coastal fort located on the Sagres peninsula, just outside the town of Sagres. The fort has only a single fortified wall and is surrounded on its other three sides by dramatic cliffs and crashing surf. Originally used to protect the town from North African raiders, the Fortaleza de Sagres is most well-known for its connection to Henry the Navigator. Legend has it that Henry the Navigator set up the ‘School of Sagres’ within the fort to teach techniques and methods of seafaring during the Portuguese Age of Discoveries.
