First developed as a series of smaller walls protecting various separate Chinese states, the Great Wall of China was connected more than 2000 years ago by the Emperor Qin to defend the first consolidated kingdom of China. On our holidays to China including the Great Wall of China, we’ll embark on a guided trek along a section of the wall with an expert, local guide. We’ll explore the ruins of this marvellous man-made structure from the Gubeikou Section to Jinshanling Section, covering a distance of 15km by foot over approximately 6 hours.
The incredible, life-size statues of the Terracotta Army were originally sculpted in 209 BC for the emperor Qin Shi Huang, who believed these warriors and horses would protect him in the afterlife. Buried with him at the time of his death, they remained underground until 1974, when farmers digging for a well near the emperor’s mausoleum discovered the relics. Work on unearthing the army continues today and so far over 7,000 pottery soldiers, horses, chariots, and weapons have been found. On our holidays to China, we’ll visit the Terracotta Army to see this remarkable collection arranged in battle formations
